To play 1080p video you need to offload the video to the graphics chip.
Eventually, more programs will support this but currently the best way to do this is to install the K-Lite Codec Pack (Standard or Full) and use the included Windows Media Player Home Cinema (WMP-HC).
You need to enable DXVA for AVC and VC-1. I could not find out if MPEG2 was also supported but it's easy to find out.
Too ensure it's working, go into the settings to make sure it's enabled, then try running a video with and without it enabled and look at your CPU. To monitor your CPU, open the Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL). Also check "Hide..", "Minimize.." and change "update Speed" to LOW.
You also want the program "MediaInfo." You can right-click any video, choose MediaInfo and it will show you your Video, Container, Audio and Subtitle information. You are mainly looking to see if it's AVC, VC-1 (and maybe MPEG2).
You can try downloading trailers. Not all are in the correct format. Most BluRay rips are AVC. MKV (Matroska container), AVC (Video codec) and AC3 or DTS (audio codecs) are the most common. When installing K-Lite be sure to first uninstall any other codec packs. *Windows Media Center needs 64-bit codecs if you have a 64-bit Operating System; 32-bit Windows works fine with just the 32-bit version of K-Lite. Currently AVC and VC1 do NOT get offloaded from the CPU so you need to use WMP-HC.
It sounds complicated, but do this:
0) Uninstall any codec packs and REBOOT
1) got to www.free-codecs.com and download and Install (or run directly to install) K-Lite Codec Pack FULL (or Standard) and MediaInfo
2) be sure DXVA is enabled
3) find a video and check it with MediaInfo
4) CTRL-ALT-DEL to monitor CPU usage
5) run the video and monitor your CPU usage
6) repeat with DXVA disabled and monitor your CPU usage
*1080p video is likely unplayable using your CPU without offloading to the GPU. I hope this helps. Expect more programs to support this GPU including Firefox and Internet Explorer 9 (sometime in 2010).
