I have recently learned how important it is to backup my camcorder tapes. I have a Canon Mini DV camcorder...rather than copy them to VHS, I'd rather store them on my computer hard drive. According to my manual, I can only transfer from the mini DV cassette to my computer using a firewire...there is a 4-pin slot on the camcorder.

In checking my desktop (which runs on Vista), there is no firewire port.

So, my question...am I headed in the right direction by considering this product? (I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to firewire...although, just by asking this question, I'm sure most of you figured that out already)

Sounds good to me. I do this as well with my mini DV cassettes. Just plug it into your firewire port and Windows will automatically recognize the camcorder. From there you can just use Windows Movie Maker to rip the video from the cassette. Problem is that ripping is in real time so the tape plays while the computer records. It's a bit of a pain but at least you have a digital copy.
